Low sperm count: When the sperm count is low in men

When the number of sperm in the semen is less than 15 million sperm per ml, it is called oligospermia. This abnormality is one of the causes of fertility disorder in humans. What is it due to? How is it diagnosed? What therapeutic solutions are possible?

What are Low sperm count causes?

Low sperm count causes include-
  • testicular varicocele ,
  • testicular atrophy following infection with the virus responsible for mumps,
  • hormone deficiency,
  • abnormal implantation of a testicle,
  • prostate infection,
  • an infection of the seminal vesicles,
  • chemotherapy,
  • radiotherapy

Low sperm count symptoms and signs-

Low sperm count symptoms include-

It is usually when a couple has difficulty having a child that oligospermia is diagnosed as part of a fertility test . A spermogram is then performed in order to assess the quality of the man's ejaculate but also the number, mobility and morphology of the spermatozoa. This medical examination is carried out in a medical analysis laboratory by manual sampling, after three days of sexual abstinence. Oligospermia is considered when the results of the spermogram report a sperm concentration of less than 15 million per ml. However, the diagnosis cannot be strictly confirmed with a single abnormal spermogram. Other examinations must therefore be carried out for the pathology to be effective: hormonal assays, karyotype, ultrasound of the genital tract.

The three types of oligospermia-

Once the diagnosis has been made, the degree of oligospermia is defined according to the amount of sperm present in the sperm. We therefore distinguish:
  • Light oligospermia: the spermogram accounts for between 5 and 14 million sperm per ml.
  • Moderate oligospermia: the spermogram counts between 1 and 5 million spermatozoa per ml.
  • Severe oligospermia: the spermogram indicates a concentration of sperm less than 1 million per ml.

Low sperm count treatment-

Low sperm count treatment include-
The treatment of oligospermia depends mainly on its origin and its degree of severity. Thus, medical treatments aimed at improving the quality of sperm in the context of mild or moderate oligospermia show convincing results. Antibiotic drugs may, for example, be prescribed to overcome an infection. For severe oligospermia, assisted reproductive technology is envisaged for the aspiring couples.
